Browns Re-Sign Ray Agnew, Cut Kiero Small

After running for 170 yards on Thursday Night Football, the Cleveland Browns have cut fullback Kiero Small and re-signed fullback Ray Agnew.

Small was seen as a powerful blocker who could make an impact on the team’s struggling rushing attack following the loss of Alex Mack. While the running game improved Small was not a huge contributor to that improvement. He was used but the Browns found more success with two tight ends and Small is not a natural pass catcher.

Agnew was also seen as a good blocker but a better pass catching threat out of the backfield. The Browns threw to the rookie fullback a number of times. He didn’t always complete the catch but his ability was clearly there.

It is possible that being cut was a bit of a wake up call for the young Agnew and he comes back stronger. It is likely the Browns would like to have a more versatile threat in the backfield now that the line is starting to come together and gel.

As we expected, Ray Farmer will continue to churn the bottom of the roster to put together the best team he possibly can. He isn’t beholden to any of those players and his approach breeds competition. Agnew is back for now but if the Browns feel like can improve over him they will do so. That could include bring Small back. For now Agnew is the fullback.

What do you think of this move, especially after the solid rushing attack on Thursday Night?
