Benched Jay Cutler Intrigues Browns… Fans

facebooktwitterreddit

Sunday at 12:59 PM many Cleveland Browns fans thought Johnny Manziel was the ticket to a renewed Playoff Push. Less than 4 days later many of those fans are more intrigued by adding now benched Jay Cutler than continuing with Johnny Manziel.

For some of you, we need to catch you up. See just over an hour ago Adam Schefter reported that the Chicago Bears were benching Jay Cutler for this weekend, in favor of Jimmy Clausen:

As a counselor by trade, this writer was intrigued to do some social analysis using this situation. I wondered how badly Browns fans felt about Manziel after only one start and using Jay Cutler, who has had a number of bad starts over a number of years, was a good comparison. So we asked the question on Twitter to Browns fans: Manziel or Cutler? Who would you want? The answers were interesting and we want to share many of those that came through in one hours time, as well as some analysis. We will go in order as we received them:

  • So obviously Mr. Payday here is a Brian Hoyer supporter and not a big fan of Mr. Johnny Manziel. Our biases tend to lead us to one side of an argument or another. It is one reason why America is a bi-partisan country: it feels good to pick a side and supporter it strongly, always.
  • Now this from a Steelers fan, who is smart to follow division foes sites as well. Jeff George is an interesting comparison, and one that has been made before. He brings up a good point regarding talent: Cutler may be more talented than Manziel, and most QBs in the league. Talent only gets you so far as on field intelligence, feel for the game and work ethic may be more important.
  • So our friends at Fear the Sword, SB Nation’s Cavs site, retweeted our question which gave us a diverse amount of answers which was nice. It is a question because I thought it would be fun. Why the answer is clearly Manziel, contract aside, still intrigues me.
  • FtS’ editor comes through correct with his Clausen answer. Of course is Cutler is benched for Jimmy Clausen then Clausen must be the answer. Is he a free agent after the season?
  • Tim Couch might be available but after his recent backing up of Bernie Kosar he is not likely getting a call. Creativity gets a point though.
  • I think what Mr. BiPolar is saying is that Cutler could be a choice if he is willing to back load his contract a bit, a restructuring. So maybe Cutler is the answer if the contract is the only issue?
  • Glad to have grabbed some Bears fans attention. Just like some Browns fans wanted to kick Hoyer out over the last month, and Manziel by halftime Sunday, she is ready to get rid of Cutler herself.
  • Reading in to it, he doesn’t think Johnny Manziel has a chance so Cutler is better than no chance.
  • Goose jumps in on Kevin’s post and uses stats to backup his argument. Seems he thinks the Bears weapons are much better, as most/all do. I wonder if Johnny could be successful in Chicago with all those weapons.
  • “Best QB we have had since ’99? Compliment or insult? Appreciate Joey’s willingness to note we have no clue how good Manziel could be.

"@JaredKMueller Joe Namath."

  • Did you say Joe Montania?
  • Someone using unabashedly, correctly I might add, in a tweet must be correct, no?
  • John has an interesting perspective. He doesn’t say anything about Manziel but clearly has seen enough Jay Cutler to make him sure we don’t want him.
  • Some people are very sure of themselves. Whether that is because he is a Johnny Manziel fan, hates Brian Hoyer or has seen many Jay Cutler games is unknown. Interestingly he is one of the few who said Manziel, so he judges the rest of you has not knowing sports. Sorry about that.
  • A name most Browns fans could get behind is Marcus Mariota. Unlikely but the Browns have a ton of assets so anything is possible. If this is the dream, better hope Manziel blows up big time in the next two games to salvage his trade value.
  • And one last vote for Johnny Manziel, again strongly.

So what have we learned?

  • Manziel backers feel very strong about him over Cutler.
  • Many believe Jay Cutler would be the best, or most talented, QB for the Browns since… a long time.
  • One week of bad play by Johnny Manziel soured the fan base to him quickly.
  • Other people’s trash often looks very interesting. In America we call this Garage Sales or Flea Markets.

Obviously Jay Cutler is not getting traded to the Cleveland Browns. His contract is huge and his performance has been terrible. The Bears are unlikely to cut him, due to his contract and having no other options. If they did it is unlikely Cutler signs with the Browns but we could entertain that then. The real takeaway is that Browns fans are not impressed by Johnny Manziel, enough so that some/many would take Jay Cutler, who has been bad for many weeks during many seasons in a row. That is some very quick reactionary decision making.
