Browns Rumor: Trying to Sign Josh McCown

facebooktwitterreddit

The Cleveland Browns made it clear at the NFL Combine that they are trying to find a starting level quarterback. A Browns rumor says that the team is competing to sign 35 year old veteran, journeyman Josh McCown. They are reportedly fighting with at least the Buffalo Bills for his services:

It doesn’t make a ton of sense for the Browns to decide who their QB is without a chance to talk to the other free agent QBs, unless they actually believe McCown is the best that would be available. Either that or the team has heard it through the grapevine that none of their other targets are interested in signing in Cleveland.

Either one of those is a big concern for the Browns. Either they think McCown, a player who has barely played for most of his career, is the best QB and they are not good at evaluating quarterbacks or no one wants to play in Cleveland and has already made that clear. Not good options.

The Bills and Browns are similar teams. They both are built around solid defenses and running games in cold weather. The Browns have a better offensive line while the Bills weapons are much better. The Bills defense is one of the better up front while the Browns defensive strength is the defensive backs.

Signing McCown would be a stopgap measure, at best. Johnny Manziel, if okay coming out of rehab well, should be able to beat out McCown if he puts in the work needed.

Reportedly Brian Hoyer has been given very little attention from the Browns this off-season but that could change before Free Agency opens. If the Browns sign McCown they are unlikely to be able to acquire another veteran QB, nor would they be likely to want to try to.

Going into next year with Josh McCown and Johnny Manziel at the top of their depth chart would not encourage many fans or analysts. While the QBs available this off-season are not a great set, McCown is not one of the top guys on that list.

What would you think if the Browns sign Josh McCown?
