Report: Pernell McPhee A Browns Target

facebooktwitterreddit

According to a report on Orange and Brown Report, and Lane Adkins who does a great job covering the team, the Cleveland Browns are interested in Baltimore Ravens free agent to be Pernell McPhee:

"“Pernell McPhee – The Baltimore Ravens are attempting to re-sign the pass rushing defensive lineman prior to March 10th, if unsuccessful, the Browns are an interested party to fit into their pursuit of a pass rusher. McPhee has been best served in a situational role, which wouldn’t be quite out of the question in Mike Pettine’s rotating defense in Cleveland.”"

Adkins doesn’t report things with out good solid information so you can take this to the bank. The issue will be whether the Browns are willing to pay handsomely for a player being described as a situational guy. Being able to steal a guy away from the rival Ravens is always fun to think about and has worked out pretty well with Paul Kruger.

On the other hand the Browns have a few holes that they will be looking to fill in free agency and there are quite a few teams with a lot of cap space, which could push up the price on some of the free agents. If McPhee is limited to just a pass rusher there is still a ton of value. On the other hand those assets could be used for a Mike Pettine former player in Jerry Hughes, a player that is a bit more complete than McPhee.

The free agent market is an interesting one this year. There are quite a few wide receivers, offensive linemen and defensive linemen. There are a couple pass rusher that might interest the Browns but those players are almost always paid a premium.

Jimmy Haslam has stated that the Browns are unlikely to be as big of players in free agency as they were last season. Last year they had three big signings: Donte Whitner, Karlos Dansby and Andrew Hawkins. Could the Browns stay quiet even though they have needs and the cap space? Could Haslam just be trying to use the media as a smokescreen for an aggressive off-season.

As it is, Adkins tells us that McPhee could be a target for the Browns. He fills a need to go along with Barkevious Mingo and Kruger, likely replacing free agent Jabaal Sheard. Could the situational pass rusher become something more in Cleveland? Can the Browns pull in Hughes or another outside ‘backer instead? Will the team be aggressive in free agency? A lot of questions, answers will come soon enough.

What do you think about Pernell McPhee to the Browns?
