Report: RFA Tashaun Gipson Getting Interest from Jaguars

The Cleveland Browns took a risk when they put a 2nd round tender on free safety Tashaun Gipson. Gipson had a breakout season last year until he got hurt and missed the last five games of the season. With the 2nd round tender, much like Alex Mack‘s Transition Tag last season, the Browns could match any offer Gipson got. If they decided not to match the offer they would receive Gipson’s new team’s 2nd round pick.

It looks like the Jacksonville Jaguars could be the team again, like they did last year with Mack, that pursues a player the Browns could match their offer:

Gipson is a talented safety and Jags’ head coach Gus Bradley desires such a player, like Earl Thomas that he had in Seattle, to man his backfield. Gipson had 6 interceptions in only 11 games last year and is really coming into his own.

The Jaguars could put the Browns in a difficult position. Depending on how active the Browns are in free agency, that whole Darrelle Revis thing comes to mind, the Jags could try to structure the deal in a way to make it tough on the Browns. They also could throw in language, like they did with Mack, that would allow Gipson to become a free agent earlier than the Browns would prefer.

Mike Pettine is known to love his free safeties and Gipson in particular. They are likely to match any reasonable contract that Gip could get. The Jags, with even more cap space than the Browns, could decide to give him an unreasonable contract leading to the Browns letting him go and getting the 36th pick in the upcoming draft.

That is unlikely as the Browns have no one, unless Pierre Desir is moved over, to take over for Gipson. Jordan Poyer and Jim Leonhard were backups last year but Leonhard is retired and Poyer is a part time player at this point. The 36th pick sounds nice just not as good as having Gipson back roaming the secondary.

Do you think the Jaguars, or another team, actually sign Tashaun Gipson and risk their 2nd round pick?
