The Cleveland Browns have released defensive lineman Tory Slater, according to Aaron Wilson of The Houston Chronicle.

The Browns were originally awarded Slater off waivers on June 2.

The 6-foot-5, 290-pound Slater had originally signed with Seattle as an undrafted free agent out of West Georgia. He arrived at the school weighing less than 200 pounds after playing wide receiver and running track in high school. But within the first two practices, he was a member of the Wolves’ defensive line and spent his first three seasons as a defensive end.

As a senior he was moved to the interior of the defensive line and recorded 10 sacks (nine of which came in the season’s final six games), 69 tackles, including 16.5 tackles for loss, while helping the Wolves go 12-3 and reach the Div. II semifinal game.

Just last week the Browns placed  placed Slater on the active/physically unable to perform list.

Even if healthy Slater would have faced a tough battle during training camp to make the final roster. The Browns kept just seven defensive lineman last season, and Slater was one of 14 players listed at the position heading into camp.

Now that number is down by one, with Randy StarksDanny SheltonXavier CooperPhil TaylorJohn HughesBilly WinnDesmond BryantIshmaa’ily KitchenArmonty Bryant  Jacobbi McDanielJamie Meder, Christian Tupou and Dylan Wynn listed at the position.

The move leaves the Browns one player below the maximum number of 90 on the roster as they prepare for veterans to report on Wednesday and the first practice of training camp on Thursday.
