Former Browns HB/WR Preston Carpenter Dies at Age 77
Former Browns halfback/wide receiver Preston Carpenter passed away on Thursday at the age of 77. Carpenter was the Browns’ first pick in the 1956 NFL Draft (13th overall) out of the University of Arkansas, and was chosen as a halfback. In his first season, Carpenter rushed for 756 yards.
However, Jim Brown joined the team the following season and Carpenter made the switch to wide receiver. In four years with the Browns, Carpenter had 96 receptions for 1,368 yards and five touchdowns.
Carpenter died of natural causes.
