The Cleveland Browns are hosting Derek Carr in Berea for what is believed to be the first of their private workouts with the top quarterbacks from this year’s draft. The Browns have put very little value on attending the quarterback’s Pro Days and have preferred to simply get their questions answered in a private situation. Despite this overwhelming sense from media that this is a three quarterback race at the top with Teddy Bridgewater, Blake Bortles and Johnny Manziel, but Carr has been linked to the Browns throughout the process.
It remains to be seen if the Browns like Carr at 4, 26 or somewhere in between, but he seems to fit the criteria they have set out for getting a quarterback. Carr has the strongest arm of the top prospects in this draft with the ability to make every throw on the field. He possesses enough mobility to extend plays and make some plays with his feet, and he comes in with a ton of experience playing at Fresno State and leading them to back to back Mountain West Championships.
The questions that have been levied at Carr start with his footwork and just being consistent with how he throws the ball. Some have also questioned his ability to handle pressure and the level of competition he played.
Carr is reported to have done outstanding in meetings at the Senior Bowl as well as the Scouting Combine, so the expectation is he will leave the Browns with a good impression. His skill set would fit with some of the quarterbacks that both Kyle and Mike Shanahan have had in their offenses and many have compared Carr to Jay Cutler.
