Roster Moves: Surprise Cuts in First Wave of Browns Moves

facebooktwitterreddit

The Browns have until 4PM to get their roster down to 53. So far we know unofficially of 5 roster moves, mostly through Twitter. All of them are different levels of surprise but none were for sure cuts, a couple were assumed to have made the team already and we will start with them:

Dion Lewis

Lewis was the Browns 3rd running back throughout the Pre-Season, and Mike Pettine stated as much. Lewis had shown great quickness and surprised many that he fit well in the Zone Blocking Scheme. Rookie Isaiah Crowell‘s breakout game against the Bears may have changed the Browns mind about Lewis. Lewis will get a lot of attention as a diverse player that can make plays in tight spaces.

Garrett Gilkey

At the start of the off-season Gilkey was slated to fight for the starting right guard spot. He even started Training Camp in that spot. Gilkey’s quick feet and aggressive style seemed to fit the ZBS. Instead he was beaten out by John Greco and now is cut. The Browns have claimed 4 different offensive linemen in the last month. A sign that they didn’t feel great about the depth on the team.

Chris Ogbonnaya

Obby was on the bubble but cutting Lewis would seem to give him the opportunity as he can play some fullback as well. He has been a solid special teams player as well. Instead he is out as well. That leaves the Browns will rookie Crowell and Terrance West to go with starter Ben Tate.

Nate Burleson

Burleson was not healthy for much of the off-season but looked good against the Bears. He was brought in to provide the Browns with a veteran presence with their set of young guys otherwise at that spot. He was not able to do enough to be held on to which means the Browns will start their 53 man roster with a bunch of young guys to join Andrew Hawkins and Miles Austin.

Jacobbi McDaniel

A person favorite of this writer. McDaniel could make it back to the practice squad but likely someone will pick him up. Barkevious Mingo even noted how he had been disruptive during camp. The Browns have a ton of depth on the defensive line so this cut is the least surprising.
