Report: Rex Grossman Cut to Make Room for Claimed Player

So much for thinking we had a good idea of what would happen with Rex Grossman as the Browns solid, veteran mentor QB. Report is out that Grossman will be cut to make room for one of the players claimed on waivers today:

It is a very gutsy move for the new regime of Ray Farmer and Mike Pettine. While Grossman wasn’t brought in until late in Training Camp he was seen as a solid addition in the QB room. Both Brian Hoyer and Johnny Manziel noted how much help he had been to them.

More from Browns News

Grossman also fared fairly well in his lone playing time of the pre-season against the Bears. It was obvious that he knew the offense and could hit receivers in stride. Grossman was a solid choice to backup Hoyer as Manziel learns the ropes. Now Manziel is the lone backup on the roster with the Browns cutting Connor Shaw as well yesterday. Shaw could make the Browns Practice Squad as well.

The Browns will continue to make moves on their roster to try to make the team better. The hope is cutting Grossman doesn’t come back to bite the team in the first few weeks of the season. A Hoyer injury means an unprepared Manziel is up to the plate. Will the Browns have to find another way to have a emergency 3rd quarterback on their roster? Do they have a Wildcat plan in place if both QBs get injured?

Grossman wasn’t a game changer but cutting him seems like a risky move even though Grossman is likely to be available any time the Browns need him.

What do you think of this move?
