Browns Inactives: Big Names Not Playing Today

The Cleveland Browns have a tough game ahead of them and now, with the Browns Inactive list official, have an even bigger up hill climb:

Barkevious Mingo and Jordan Cameron are the big names, due to injury, who are out. They play a huge role for the Browns. Ben Tate is expected to miss a few games so his name is of no surprise. After Justin Gilbert struggled last week, Pierre Desir was thought to have a chance to play today. His knee injury from pre-season could be one reason he is inactive today.

The Browns defensive line, vitally important against Drew Brees, is also down 2 members in John Hughes (injury) and Ishmaa’ily Kitchen (inactive) but gets Desmond Bryant back. Kitchen plays in relief at the nose tackle but with the Saints high octane passing game the Browns are more likely to go small up front. Bryant commands double teams when healthy and could cause havoc for the Saints. The Browns may go with Phil Taylor at the nose with Desmond and Armonty Bryant at ends on passing downs.

Having Jabaal Sheard as a backup is a great sign of depth. Sheard, along with Paul Kruger, can play with his hand down as well as rush the passer from the outside. Last year he improved his coverage skills, which will be necessary with Mingo out. Mingo’s quick burst around the corner would of helped get Brees off his spot, Kruger and Sheard are far more likely to beat their men with power, leverage and moves which all take more time generally.

No tight end on the Browns roster replaces Cameron, Jim Dray is starting, but the Browns plan to run then run some more. Cameron is an okay blocker but Dray and Gary Barnidge are stronger at the point of attack. In the passing game Gerell Robinson could see some time at TE even though he just came over from Denver’s practice squad.
