Patriots Waive Kenbrell Thompkins; Browns Option?

The New England Patriots made a move today, the day before their Sunday game. For the Patriots this is not a surprising thing, they even did so the day before the Super Bowl in the past. That they waived Kenbrell Thompkins is a surprise:

Thompkins is in his second season in the league after going undrafted in 2013. Thompkins played in 12 games last year and was targeted a ton by Tom Brady, 70 times. He only had 32 receptions on those 70 targets. He scored 4 touchdowns and had a long of 49 yards. He was marked for 7 drops last season.

He seemed to be a Brady favorite, with reports coming out today that Brady is unhappy with the move. Coach Bill Belichick has shown little concern for making Brady happy and is only worried about getting the team to compete. The Patriots have not been able to create separation this season and Brady has struggled. Thompkins has only played in 2 games this season, with 6 receptions for 53 yards.

The 6’1″ receiver has not broken out as many had hoped after two great Training Camps. Thompkins is old for a 2nd year player, 26, which could also limit teams interest in him.

For the Cleveland Browns the continued search for wide receivers included adding one yesterday. Thompkins could be an option for the Browns if he makes it to them on the Waiver Wire. The Browns haven’t had great play from receivers besides Andrew Hawkins. Miles Austin has been fine enough and Marlon Moore, Taylor Gabriel and Travis Benjamin have had a play or two of success but none has been outstanding. Thompkins would add a receiver over six-foot and could benefit from a change of scenery.

Should the Browns put in a waiver claim?
