Arian Foster OUT for Texans, Huge for Browns

The Cleveland Browns caught a huge break as Arian Foster has been ruled OUT for Sunday’s game:

Foster has been the cog that has made the Texans offense go, even with the limited Ryan Fitzpatrick at quarterback. Foster leads the Texans by a wide margin, 822 to 234, in rushing yards as well as attempts, 161 to 68, even after missing a game. Foster has had seven rushing touchdowns with no other TDs by running backs. He also has had 26 receptions, good for third on the team.

The Browns now have to deal with backups Alfred Blue and Jonathan Grimes. The Browns have struggled this season in the run game but not having to play Foster should greatly help their efforts on Sunday.

The Browns face off with Ryan Mallett in his first start. His cannon arm has most hoping he will hit some down the field passes. Having Arian Foster to setup the play action deep pass would have been a huge weapon for him. Now he will have his back against the wall against the Browns.

The weather also will likely play a role in the game plan. It is expected to be very cold with snow. That has often led to very conservative play calls and a ton of running. Yet snowy conditions makes it difficult for defenders to keep their footing when offensive players make their breaks. How the Browns secondary cover the talented Texans receiving corp will be decisive.

Expect the Browns to come after Mallett early and often to try to force him into poor choices. Having little running game means the Texans are likely to get creative with screens to both backs and receivers to slow down the pass rush. The Browns will need to maintain their responsibilities to be successful.

With Foster out the Browns will also be more conservative on offense. With J.J. Watt and Jadeveon Clowney on the other side the Browns have to be careful not to let them control the game. Short passes, cutback runs and good special teams will all be key.
