Brian Hoyer: Stats Show Best Deep Ball Thrower
The Cleveland Browns magical season has coincided with the magical run that Brian Hoyer is on. The big question for the Browns going forward is what to do with Hoyer since his contract is up at the end of the year.
One of the biggest critiques of Hoyer’s is his arm strength and deep ball accuracy. Anecdotal watching of the game shows a number of times that Hoyer’s ball flutters on deep passes or he has to put a ton of air under it to get it there. This creates concerns that long term the Browns would be better off with someone else running the show and giving Hoyer big money could backfire.
However, last Thursday Night we saw Brian Hoyer throw crisp spirals to receivers in 40 mile an hour wind gusts while $100 Million Dollar Man Andy Dalton could not. His arm strength seemed fine in terrible conditions but concerns still continue.
Stats show that Hoyer is the best deep ball thrower this season:
Besides Ryan’s desire to try to get people to say “Hoyers Gonna Hoy!” that is an impressive piece of information. “One of these things is not like the others, one of these things just doesn’t belong.”
Or does it? Hoyer will likely never be compared to Andrew Luck, Drew Brees or Aaron Rodgers except that they are all quarterbacks. However over time could Hoyer’s ability to dissect defenses, make good decisions and be accurate with the football actually make him a Top 10 NFL deep passer?
Anything is possible.
Pat McManamon noted some interesting statistics when he was looking at the success of Browns receivers this season:
"Some numbers about the Browns passing game show just how well the group has played:The Browns lead the league with 13.7 yards per catch, almost a full yard (nine-tenths) ahead of second-place Washington. As a team the Browns are averaging 8.0 yards per attempt, sixth in the league. The Browns have 36 plays of 20 yards or more in the passing game, sixth in the league, and are tied for seventh in the league with seven plays of 40 yards or more (numbers that should also speak to Brian Hoyer’s arm strength).According to ESPN Stats and Information, Hoyer has thrown 74 passes that have traveled 15 yards, which ties for sixth in the league. His completion percentage on those throws — 55.4 — is the best in the league. Hoyer gets the credit for throwing them, the receivers for catching them."

Watching Brian Hoyer throw deep balls isn’t always pretty but so far this season, in nine games, the stats show that he is doing an amazing job.
