Pats Release DL Casey Walker; A Browns Option?
The New England Patriots brought back LaGarrette Blount today on a two year contract. In order to make room for Blount the Pats released defensive lineman Casey Walker:
The Browns, with their every growing injury list on the defensive line, are on the look out for help on the line. Could Walker provide them such?
Walker, a defensive tackle in the Patriots hybrid defense, was undrafted out of Oklahoma last season. He didn’t play any games his rookie season but has appeared in five games and had 11 combined tackles, including one sack. Two of those tackles were stuffs behind the line of scrimmage.

Walker is a stout 6’1″ 335 pound mountain of a man. He was a victim of the numbers game with the Patriots but could be a big addition to the Browns roster. His size makes him a fit as the nose tackle in a 3-4 defense. With big Phil Taylor out for the season and the Brown run defense struggling the Browns could use a player whose first NFL tackle was described this way:
"You probably recognize the slimmed-down Walker from his highlight play Sunday night: As Cincinnati, in an obvious moment of confusion, scrambled to call a play and avoid the delay of game, Walker shot through the A-gap unblocked, devoured the 238-pound Jeremy Hill, and sent him flying to the Gillette turf. First career tackle."
The Browns could release Sione Fua or an extra receiver or tight end to make room for Walker who they would have to claim off waivers. Because of when he was placed on waivers, near the end of the week, it will be interesting if/when he is claimed. There are plenty of teams with higher waiver claim priority than the Browns, making him coming to Cleveland difficult.
Should the Browns be able to bring in the big guy in the middle it should help the Browns run game and possibly open up more room for pass rushers.
Here is a highlight of Walker in college sacking Colt McCoy‘s little brother, Case McCoy:
Look like the kind of player that could help the Browns out a bit this year in their playoff push?
