Duron Carter, Browns Free Agent Target, Schedules Workout

Many Cleveland Browns fans believe the team needs to invest in a wide receiver in the upcoming draft. Duron Carter could make that point mute. The son of Buckeye legend, and HoF until he’s dead, Chris Carter, Duron is eligible to be signed right after the Super Bowl this year. Carter has scheduled a workout, where the Browns are expected to be one of many teams checking him out:

  • Carter has already spoken with Browns GM Ray Farmer and seems to be well aware both of the interest and need that the Browns have. Some reports have his first choice to be the Indianapolis Colts, Andrew Luck interests many. The Colts would provide Carter with a better quarterback but he would have very little opportunity. The Colts have invested in T.Y. Hilton, which has paid off, Donte Moncrief is coming on in his rookie season and they have two pass catching tight ends in Dwayne Allen and Coby Fleener.

The Browns on the other hand have Josh Gordon, the all world receiver who commands double coverage, and Andrew Hawkins, the amazing slot receiver, but lack another outside guy. Even the Browns All Pro tight end Jordan Cameron isn’t guaranteed to return next year. That would give Carter a chance to really shine upon his arrival in the NFL.

Carter was not selected in the 2013 NFL Draft after a interesting college career that included Ohio State and Coffeyville Community College.

Carter went on to the Canadian Football League and played well. He accumulated over 900 yards receiving his first season and over 1,000 this season.

The 6’5″ receiver has big play ability, great hands and is developing as a route runner. His past issues are less about character issues and more related to some immaturity and academic issues, those seem to be behind now.

The 23 year old will not be lacking for options this winter and will likely choose carefully who he puts his career in the hands of. His father will be a part of the process and should guide him to a solid coaching staff.

The Browns should be of interest to Carter for other reasons besides opportunity. The Browns have the money to spend to sign him, they have a ton of cap space, so he should be able to squeeze a couple extra dollars out of them. In his first season as a HC Mike Pettine has earned the respect of his players, and many others around the league. He is the type of coach players respect. The Browns are a young team with tons of draft assets, and cap space, to get better. Signing Carter would free up a likely high draft pick to develop another area of the team.

Carter also could be drawn by former Buckeye and team leader Donte Whitner who commands the respect of everyone he has ever played with. Fellow Florida raised star Joe Haden should be able to help sell Duron on playing in Cleveland while the lure of playing with dynamo Johnny Manziel for the foreseeable future also could be a selling point, on and off the field.

For now we wait to hear how the workout goes and how interested the Browns are. Farmer and Pettine haven’t seemed overly anxious to invest heavily in the receiver position but given Carter’s age, talent, experience in the CFL and lineage they might change their mind.
