Johnny Manziel: 1st Quarter Decision & Play Analysis

Just like last week the story of today’s Cleveland Browns game will be Johnny Manziel. In as much we we be watching his decision making and play today. With the Browns out of the playoffs the development of their young quarterback is the biggest story. While we hope for a winning record, or at least an 8 – 8 mark, Manziel’s improvement from his first start will be defining.

We follow Johnny Manziel’s play calling all day long.

Plays and Decisions

  • Manziel will get the ball without having to deal with a deficit for the first time ever in the NFL.
  • First play is a pass attempt to Josh Gordon on the outside.
    • Ball fluttered and was outside of where Gordon was looking for it.
    • One read and throw by Manziel. Pattern was fine for that decision.
  • On 3rd and long, Manziel scrambles for a couple.
    • First option was not open, a little pressure and Manziel got out of the pocket.
    • No receivers came open, Manziel scrambles fora  couple yards.
    • 3 and out. Browns punt.
  • Browns get the ball back down 3 – 0 and a 2:47 left in the quarter.
  • Play action pass to Jordan Cameron for 3 yards.
    • Pressure came quick on the boot.
    • Manziel quick side arm throw was well placed.
  • Manziel rollout pass is knocked down.
    • Terrible play call with all receivers on short side of the field.
    • Manziel did good to get some time and try to make something happen.
    • Good decision.
  • On 3rd and long, Manziel hits Andrew Hawkins for 28 yards.
    • Ball delivered on time.
    • Ball delivered right where it needed to be.
    • Went through progressions perfectly.

Summary

Not a ton of plays again by the Browns offense but Manziel has looked better this week than last. He has made good decisions, the ball looks like it is coming out of his hand better and the offense is over the 50 yard line. So far so good.

Grade

B- Manziel wasn’t great but with far lower expectations he has played fine.
