Johnny Manziel Blasted by Boomer Esiason

Johnny Manziel has had a terrible first year in the NFL and his rookie season ended with the worst possible week. Manziel ended the year on the IR and is being blamed for for throwing a party that led to Josh Gordon being suspended and Justin Gilbert being placed Inactive for today’s game. Question swirl whether Manziel will be on the team next year, whether the Browns will draft another QB or will bring back Brian Hoyer.

To add insult to injury, Manziel was blasted today by Boomer Esiason:

Esiason’s point is that a quarterback’s main responsibility is to lead the team. While Manziel is on the IR and had little responsibility besides going to treatment. On the other hand Manziel’s willingness to plan and throw a party a few days before the Browns final game of the season seems to show what his priorities are.

While Manziel has a rocket arm, great feet and strong competitive nature, those skills in and of themselves are not enough to make for a successful quarterback. Pure skills might be enough for linemen but the quarterback has to have much, much more to truly succeed.

That starts with what the players priorities are. Is Johnny Manziel willing to put aside fun, fame and friends so as to put in the work required to play at a high level?

That doesn’t just mean working hard during practice or even during Training Camp, it starts with Manziel seeing his job as the quarterback for the Cleveland Browns as the most important thing for his time and energy.

His skill and talent are not great enough to overcome a lack of priorities. It wasn’t enough for Ryan Leaf, JaMarcus Russell or any other quarterback that has ever stepped foot on the field of the NFL.

The great news for Johnny Manziel and the Cleveland Browns is that he is in control of what happens, no one else. He can succeed or fail and it will all be due to him.
