Two NFL Mock Drafts: Head to Head

The College Football Playoffs are over and The Ohio State Buckeyes are the National Champions. Time to really focus in on NFL Mock Drafts now. Players’ current projections will change greatly over time due to off-season games, the Combine and individual workouts. It will be interesting to see who rises and falls over the next few months.

For now we take a look at Two CBS Sports NFL Mock Drafts as they go head to head. One is sure to make Cleveland Browns fans really happy and the other will likely intrigue them. We love looking at Dane Brugler and Rob Rang and how they see things similar and different.

Dane Brugler

"12. CLEVELAND BROWNS(7-9)Kevin White, WR, West Virginia: Who knows how much longer Josh Gordon will last in Cleveland, which is why wide receiver could be a possibility in the first round for the Browns. White is dynamic with the ball in the air, using his tracking ability and strong hands to attack the ball and come down with it."

A good start, according to most fans, as addressing the wide receiver position. White has been a popular pick for the Browns by most Mock Drafts. He is a senior with great body control, great hands and the ability to run all the routes. It will be interesting how the offensive coordinator impacts the receiver position. Kyle Shanahan loved route runners which led to smaller guys.

In Brugler’s draft he passes on a couple of offensive tackles and Malcom Brown the big nose tackle from Texas. He doesn’t have another receiver selected until #29 which may say something about how he sees the other receivers and needs on those teams.

"19. CLEVELAND BROWNS (FROM BUFFALO)(7-9)Alvin Dupree, DE, Kentucky: With Jabaal Sheard set for free agency, the Browns could have a need at pass rusher where Barkevious Mingo has struggled to cement a starting job. Dupree is a former tight end who is still growing on defense, but the natural athleticism makes him an attractive player."

A player that could go much higher in the draft based on his Combine workout. Dupree, who goes by Bud a ton, has very little experience but could develop into a big time pass rusher. With Mingo struggling to develop some fans may not want to develop another outside rusher.

The Browns have to make a decision with Sheard and also have Paul Kruger to join Mingo even if Sheard leaves. Mingo has played well, especially in the run game, but hasn’t put up the number of sacks that many have expected to see from him. It would be surprising to see the Browns go with an exterior player on their defense instead of an interior player.

Rob Rang

"12. CLEVELAND BROWNS(7-9)Andrus Peat, OT, Stanford: As the only team with two first-round picks, the Browns have a lot of flexibility, including potentially making a good offensive line one of the league’s elite. A star left tackle for the Cardinal, Peat is blessed with remarkable balance and agility for a man of his 6-7, 315-pound dimensions. He would provide an upgrade over Mitchell Schwartz at right tackle and could be groomed to eventually take over for perennial Pro Bowler Joe Thomas."

A monster offensive tackle to add to the good line the team already has. Adding Peat would be a big upgrade to the Browns offense. He would help open holes for the running game while also giving time for whoever is the Browns quarterback. Peat’s size and feet make him an interesting candidate and moves Schwartz either inside to guard or as a good backup that has been lacking.

Rang has the Browns passing on a number of players including Danny Shelton and a couple outside linebackers. Peat is a good player but could fill their right tackle needs with Michael Bowie, someone who they took off the Seattle Seahawks last year. So the need on the line might be less than Browns fans think.

"19. CLEVELAND BROWNS (FROM BUFFALO)(7-9)Kevin White, WR, West Virginia: The Browns’ defense and running game were good enough to make them competitive, but the lack of a top-flight receiver limits the team’s upside and Josh Gordon’s future with the franchise is very much in doubt. No player has boosted his stock more this season than White, a 6-3, 209-pound, who climbs the ladder to make contested catches look easy."

And here might be the draft that makes most Browns fans the happiest. Drafting a huge offensive tackle and coming back with a big receiver at #19 answers offensive questions that fans want solved. White may not have the ceiling of some of the recent 1st round receivers but could be a good #1 after a couple of years.

Even though the offense gets a huge upgrade the defense, which struggled up the middle all of last year, will need to be addressed. Often in the past linemen, on both sides, rise on draft day but after the success of receivers last year we could expect them to be a bit higher this year.

So which NFL Mock Draft do you like best? How do you feel about Kevin White since both have him going to the Browns?
