Browns Rumor: Steve Walsh, former NFL QB, Interview with Team
The Cleveland Browns have found their offensive coordinator in John Defilippo now they are on to filling out the rest of their staff. A new Browns rumor is that the team is looking at former NFL QB Steve Walsh for the position and will interview him soon. This according to Alex Marvez of Fox Sports:
"A source told FOX Sports that Steve Walsh will be interviewing Saturday with the Browns for their vacancy at quarterbacks coach."
Walsh was the 1st overall pick in the Supplemental Draft in 1989 by the Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys had also used the 1st overall pick in the regular NFL Draft to select a quarterback. That QB turned out to be the one to lead the Cowboys for years to come: Troy Aikman.
Walsh was traded to the New Orleans Saints the next season and led them to the playoffs. He played for 4 more teams in his 11 year career. He retired from the league in 1999.
He has limited coaching experience. He coached a high school team in Florida since 2008. That is one reason Walsh seems to fit with the Browns. Mike Pettine was a high school football coach and Defilippo is the son of a high school football coach, like Pettine. Pettine has a soft spot for coaches who work at that level.

Yet he isn’t just giving the job away. Walsh will have to prove that he knows enough, can teach enough and is ready to coach on this level. He wasn’t a great, or even good, NFL QB but that often doesn’t impact the ability to coach. It actually seems like the lesser talented players become very good coaches. Could Walsh be one of those?
For now we wait. Unlike players that are signed or drafted, it is hard to judge coaching hires. Instead we have to guess what the hire might mean, present concerns and hopes and wait and see what happens.
If the QB coach search, now the most important thing on the docket, is similar to the coordinator search, we can expect it will be intensive, long and far reaching. As long as they get the right guy, that fits what they want, that is the most important thing.
As for Johnny Manziel, much like Coach Flip being hired, he won’t be even an important piece of the decision on who to hire for this position.
