Andrew Hawkins Interview: Giving Back to the Fans
By Paul Noel
Its not everyday here at Dawg Pound Daily (DPD) that we get five minutes to rub shoulders with the Star Players that you and I watch on the TV, but this was one of those rare occasions. Cleveland Browns’ star wide receiver Andrew Hawkins took some time out of his day to talk with us about giving back to the fans and his upcoming Super Bowl Ticket giveaway.
DPD: Andrew this Paul with Dawg Pound Daily of the FanSided Network how are you?
Hawkins: I am doing really good Paul
DPD: You are very involved with the fans via social media and fan outreach, is this something that you have always shrived to do? Why do you choose to give back so much to the fans base?
Hawkins: Thats something that I’ve always strived for, it something that once I got my career I wanted to do. I was that type of kid that wrote letters to the players that I liked and sent out cards, and I hoped to get something back, and I can remember quite a few who did. So I just know what its like to be that fan because I was that fan long before I became a professional athlete. I would always tell people that it took me so long to get to the NFL, and I feel like a fan out there on the field; like a fan has gotten the opportunity, and fours years later I still feel the same way. So I feel that I can relate with the fans because I have experienced both sides of it.
DPD: What made you want to specifically look at tickets to giveaway to the fans?
Hawkins: Being in the NFL we have access to them (tickets), and its a known thing among the players in the NFL that you don’t go to the Super Bowl unless your playing in it. So I’ve never actually been to it and I get the tickets every year and I give them away or give them to family members, so I just figured it would be cool to give them to a Super Bowl fan this year.
DPD: You just wrapped up your NCAA National Championship ticket giveaway a few weeks back, how was the turnout? And how well was it received via social media?
Hawkins: Yeah man it was awesome we had a lot of people participate and the winner Jason Durken actually sent me t-shirts that he wore to the game that said “Courtesy of Andrew Hawkins” which was cool. He did a video so we are actually going to do a cool video of it from inside the stadium, and him and his wife really enjoyed themselves. That’s what its really all about, and being that they were Ohio State fans I am sure they we happy with the outcome.
DPD: Who are you rooting for in the National Championship Game?
Hawkins: I was rooting for Ohio State, I am an adopted ‘Ohio boy’, so I was definitely rooting for State.
DPD: Are there any other giveaways in the near future other than the Super Bowl that the fans can be on the lookout for?
Hawkins: Oh yeah, I am trying to do a huge giveaway via a raffle with memorabilia signed by different player and from different teams, obviously there will be lots of Browns stuff. That is in the work right now, and all the proceeds will go to charity, individuals will get to donate and put themselves in on certain raffles and prizes, and they can pick which charity it goes too. So definitely be on the lookout for that!
DPD: Are you involved in the community through any charitable organizations?
Hawkins: Yeah definitely, the Browns organization itself does a incredible job with the community. We have our “Give 10” program with the Browns, and myself and other players show up at different events on Tuesdays in certain places. Even here in Ohio like Cincinnati we work with St. Vincent de Paul, the Walton School, there’s a bunch of them and they do so much good stuff. This is a good organization to be around even the guys on the team are very proactive and more involved than what I have seen in other professional teams.
DPD: Thanks for your time Andrew and good luck with the giveaway.
