Report: Duron Carter Chooses Colts Over Browns, Others

facebooktwitterreddit

Duron Carter can not sign a contract in the NFL until early in February. The Cleveland Browns had been in pursuit of the 2nd generation star wide receiver. Unfortunately it seems the pursuit has come up empty handed as reports are that Carter has chosen the Indianapolis Colts:

For the Browns this seems like a big miss, as the team is down to Andrew Hawkins and Taylor Gabriel as contributing level receivers. Josh Gordon is going to be suspended for a year, barring something strange happening, and Miles Austin is a free agent. Couple that with Jordan Cameron, who reportedly turned down 6 to 7 million dollars from the Browns, and the pass catchers are very limited on the team.

It makes a ton of sense for Carter to go to Indy over the Browns. They have Andrew Luck, the Browns don’t know who their quarterback is going to be. They have a stable organization, outside of an owner who has some personal issues, while the Browns have had 3 offensive coordinators in the last year (not to mention head coach, GM and owner changes as well).

Carter would have helped the Browns out greatly but whether he is a #1 type receiver is a far bigger question. He went undrafted, failed to make the Vikings out of Training Camp and has had off the field issues related to school. On the other hand, he dominated in the CFL for two seasons, is a gifted 6’5″ receiver and his great gene lineage.

The biggest reason Carter may regret going to the Colts is opportunity. With the Colts already having T.Y. Hilton, Donte Moncrief, Coby Fleener and Dwayne Allen there aren’t a ton of targets likely thrown his way.

Besides that the Colts were a perfect fit and the Browns were going to likely greatly overpay for his services to pull him away. With his studying issues in school they also may have been a bit turned off by his history as well.

Signing Carter would have been an early boon to the off-season but thankfully a ton of receivers are coming on the market that the Browns could sign. We expect them to make a run at one or two, with two signing not being a shock, during free agency.
