Randall Cobb More Likely After Joker Hire?

The Cleveland Browns have officially hired Joker Phillips. We covered the Browns new wide receiver coach here. One of Joker’s finest feathers in his cap is Green Bay Packers’ star receiver Randall Cobb who was Cobb’s coach at the University of Kentucky.

Cobb is a free agent this season, the Browns need a receiver (or 3), have a ton of cap space and now have Cobb’s old coach who would be coaching him. It leads to the obvious question that Mikey put together earlier today:

Yes Mikey we want to freak out so please let us. Is it possible that the Cleveland Browns could sign Randall Cobb in free agency? Some reasons why it is possible:

  • The Packers do not have a history of spending big money on receivers and just signed Jordy Nelson to an extension.
  • The Pack drafted Devante Adams, who had a great post-season, and Jeff Janis to go along with Nelson and Jarrett Boykin for an already solid WR group.
  • The Packers might believe Aaron Rodgers can make receivers better and decide to not pay big for Cobb.
  • The Browns have a ton of cap space.

More from Dawg Pound Daily

  • The Browns can feature Cobb in the pass game.
  • Joker was his coach.
  • Cobb is used to cold weather after playing in GB.
  • Cobb was born in Tennessee and Browns owner Jimmy Haslam, and his family, are royalty there.
  • Did we mention that the Browns have a ton of cap space?
  • What about Joker was his coach at Kentucky?

Okay, so the odds are that Cobb will get a good/similar offer from another team, with a more stable quarterback situation and organization. Going from Rodgers to whoever the Browns will have behind center will rarely be a decision a receiver will make.

Is Randall Cobb more likely to sign with the Browns now that they have signed Joker Phillips? It can’t hurt but it is still highly unlikely.

What do you think about Randall Cobb possibly coming to Cleveland now?
