NFL Mock Draft: Pat Kirwan’s First Mock

As the Cleveland Browns prepare for Free Agency, we gave you one player for each positional unit that the Browns could target (New Window), many analysts prepare their NFL Mock Draft process. Pat Kirwan of CBS Sports joined his guys Dane Brugler and Rob Rang by presenting his first NFL Mock Draft. Kirwan tends to update his Mocks less frequently than his counterparts which tends to lead to far more variations between his Mocks.

Lets take a look at what Kirwan has for the Browns in his NFL Mock Draft:

"12. Cleveland Browns — Brandon Scherff, OT, Iowa: Many believe he will be gone by this point in the draft, but right tackle types usually stay on the board a little longer than expected. This would be a great pick with another first-round selection in seven picks."

Kirwan has both quarterbacks off the board in the first two picks, top two wide receivers, Danny Shelton and Andrus Peat off the board before the Browns pick. He goes with Scherff as a player that can step in right away for the Browns at right tackle but could long term replace Joe Thomas. He has the Browns bypassing a number of players, including DeVante Parker and Eddie Goldman, that many would like to see the Browns pick.

Maybe he adds a player with the 19th pick that helps bring things together with Scherff:

"19. Cleveland Browns — Sammie Coates, WR, Auburn: Josh Gordon is done for at least a year, if not all together. Coates had a good Senior Bowl and has the range, target area and explosiveness to help Cleveland right away."

Hmm. Coates as the Browns answer at receiver. Coates is a large receiver but has never put it together and many have concerns that he will never be anything more than a attributes guy that can’t play the position. His hands can be suspect and his feel for the game isn’t great. Compared to not answering the Browns issue at the position, Coates is an upgrade.

Kirwan has the Browns passing on Maxx Williams and Devin Funchess as well as Carl Davis, Jordan Phillips and Malcom Brown at the defensive tackle to select Coates. For Browns fans this might be the worst combination of picks in the first round, at least at this point in time. Who knows by the time the draft comes around this might be the dream scenario. Right now? We have an idea that you might hate it.
