Browns Rumor: Team Interested in Josh McCown; Could Visit
Ryan Mallett is reportedly off the quarterback market, as we covered yesterday, for the Cleveland Browns. A new Browns rumor says the team is interested in newly free (agent) QB Josh McCown, this according to Mary Kay Cabot:
McCown is an interesting quarterback option in that he would provide a veteran to go along with Johnny Manziel, Connor Shaw and any other young QBs the Browns might bring in. On the other hand, McCown has been mediocre at best outside of half of a season with the Chicago Bears two years ago.
Sadly for the Browns he still may be an upgrade at the position. Currently Manziel is in rehab, leaving only Shaw on the Browns roster right now. Brian Hoyer, who most would agree is at least slightly better than McCown, is likely to be pursued by the team but could have mixed feelings about returning after how last year went.
The free agent, draft and trade market for QBs is very limited this year. McCown is joined by Hoyer, Jake Locker, Mark Sanchez and others as free agents, while McCown’s former Tampa Bay teammate Mike Glennon is one of few available on the trade market.
Marcus Mariota and Jameis Winston, along with possibly Brett Hundley, present the only QBs that analyst believe should ever start in the NFL out of this year’s draft class. For some Hundley is off that list while others see him and Mariota as neck and neck.

As for McCown, the 12 year vet has had two seasons of over 2,000 yards passing, including last year when he played in only 11 games. His most yards ever came in 2004 with the Arizona Cardinals when he played in 14 games and had over 2,500 yard passing. In 2013, when he started in place of the injured Jay Cutler, he threw for 1,829 yards and a career best 66.5% completion percentage. That dipped to 56.3% last year.
McCown is by no means a great option for the Browns but, if this Browns rumor is true, it shows that they are going to kick over every stone to try to get it figured out. Many would be upset if McCown, and not Hoyer, is signed by the team but the hometown boy may have no interest in returning. The Browns need to bring in a veteran of some kind to compete with, or start over, Johnny Manziel.
According to this Browns rumor that guy could be Josh McCown.
