Breaking News: Josh McCown Signs with the Browns
Well the Cleveland Browns got a new quarterback already with the breaking news that Josh McCown has signed with the team:
McCown is not the name that most fans want to hear. Even those who didn’t love Brian Hoyer likely believe he is a better quarterback than McCown who really has only had one good season, and even that was only for 8 games replacing Jay Cutler after he was injured.
The Browns have been aggressive in pursuing McCown, visiting with him for two days this week. McCown also was courted by the Buffalo Bills, among other teams.
Little is yet known about the contract that he was signed to or whether he was promised anything related to starting or the Browns bringing in another quarterback.
McCown was the big name free agent quarterback on the market last year, signing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He was benched half way through the season as poor play, and some injuries, derailed his time in the Florida. The Bucs cut him which allowed him to start his free agent process earlier than the rest of the QBs available.
The Browns still could go after another veteran this off-season but they would be unlikely to land him. Instead, with McCown at age 35, this could be a prelude to the team being aggressive in trying to find their next QB of the Future in the NFL Draft. Either that or the team has to rely on Johnny Manziel or make plans to draft a QB next year.

There are not great options out there in free agency, with Hoyer and Ryan Mallett likely leading the charge. There are also only two QBs in the upcoming draft that many think highly of, Marcus Mariota and Jameis Winston. Winston seems earmarked for the #1 pick while the Browns could be interested in trading up for Mariota but will have to fight off the Philadelphia Eagles.
Either way it looks like Manziel and Connor Shaw will have McCown joining them in the quarterback room when Training Camp starts.
A few pieces of info from Twitter before dinner:
