Browns Make Push For Jeremy Maclin

The Cleveland Browns may have “lost out” on Randall Cobb, there is no information that we were actually going after him, but Jeremy Maclin seems to be firmly in our sights. Starting with Lane Adkins, once again, and continuing with other reporters later in the day, the Browns have been in contact with Maclin:

For any player’s agent it is smart to make as much contact as possible with teams, it creates leverage. With the Browns uncertain quarterback situation, that will likely be our wording for awhile, wide receivers may not be overly interested in coming to the Lake Shore.

However, the key in free agency, money talks. There will always be players who take a little less money in order to stay where they are. Besides that, in general, if players are moving teams they go where the most money is. Could that be the Browns? Adkins doesn’t think so but a national reporter gives the impression that it could be:

That kind of price is a similar price that Randall Cobb got from the Packers. His deal may actually help deflate some of the contracts for people like Maclin, Cecil Shorts (another Browns target) and the rest. Yet, if the Browns won’t be playing in that kind of price range, will they get a receiver at all?

The part of that tweet that should excite Browns fans is right there at the end “They’re serious.” While Adkins has an amazing pulse on what is going on locally, Robinson is far more national with his reach. He is getting the sense that the Browns are very serious about bringing in a wide receiver. If it is Maclin, one of a few #1 types left, or a Shorts, Brian Hartline type, more #2s, it seems fans will get the need they want filled.

Last year, coming off a serious knee injury, Maclin signed a 1 year, $5 million deal to stay with the Eagles. In Chip Kelly’s spread offense, he produced 85 catches for 1,318 yards and 10 touchdowns. Prior to that his best year was his second year when he had 70 catches, 964 yards and 10 TDs. Teams will have to decide how much to pay him. Is he a true #1 even though he stands just six feet tall? Are his gaudy numbers inflated by Kelly’s offense? Are the 4 previous years of under 1,000 yards more accurate for his talent level?

It seems to be shaping up that the Browns will go into next year with a free agent, Andrew Hawkins, Taylor Gabriel and a draft pick at their top 4 receivers. Obviously a lot depends on who the free agent and draft pick is but, based on what we are seeing/hearing, it seems the receiving group will be quickly upgraded. That will help Josh McCown, Johnny Manziel or whoever is behind center (not as much as our strong offensive line and running game though).

What do you think of the Browns interest in Jeremy Maclin?
