Jermaine Gresham Could Move North, On Browns Radar
The Cleveland Browns have been linked to Virgil Green, Ed Dickson, Jordan Cameron and now Jermaine Gresham to fill their needs at the tight end position. (You can find all of those write-ups by clicking the link at the end of this story.)
Gresham, the former 1st round pick of the Cincinatti Bengals is being pursued by a number of teams and could be the backup option for teams going after Cameron and Julius Thomas. The Browns are at least joined by the Oakland Raiders in pursuing the big tight end:
The Raiders, with all their cap space, were expected to make big splashes in free agency. Instead their reported two biggest targets, Ndamukong Suh and Randall Cobb, have either signed (Cobb) or are reportedly going to sign (Suh) with other teams. Julius Thomas is rumored to be choosing between the Seattle Seahawks and Jacksonville Jaguars. That doesn’t leave Oakland with a lot of options.
For the Browns, Gresham can fill a two fold role. He has the ability to block as the in-line tight end but also is talented as the move tight end catching passes. The 6’5″ 260 pound tight end had 62 catches in 15 games last year for the Bengals, including 5 touchdowns and 24 catches for first downs. His best yardage year was in 2012, with 737 yards.

Gresham is not likely to break the bank. He has had some injury problems, never been able to get over the hump and there are quite a few other tight ends on the market. Yet, with a limited draft pool at the position, it is possible that a team would get desperate and splurge. The Raiders could end up being that team, the Browns are not likely to do so.
The Bengals have Tyler Eifert in place to replace Gresham, and don’t seem to be in on their own free agent. One has to wonder if the limitations of Andy Dalton could also explain some of the smaller numbers for Gresham’s career. Could he come north, joining Andrew Hawkins, and find himself living up to his 1st round status?
