The Cleveland Browns who have been relatively quiet heading into the NFL Free Agency period broke there silence and tendered four of their five restricted free agents on Monday.  Had the Browns waited until free agency opened at 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday (March 12) they would have become unrestricted free agents.

The players who received tenders include FS Tashaun Gipson, ILB Craig Robertson, S Johnson Bademosi, and NT Ishmaa’ily Kitchen. The only player not to receive a tender was TE Andre Smith, who basically was a none factor for the Browns last season after being placed on the waived/injured list.

According to a several reports including Mary Kay Cabot of the Plain Dealer, all four of the Browns restricted free agents received a 2nd Round tender worth $2.356 million.

Many including myself might be surprised by the tender news, especially since Gipson was only given a 2nd round tender. With the Browns not using a 1st round tender on Gipson, it leaves the door wide open in free agency for another team to sign Gipson to a large deal, which the Browns would have the option to match.

The Browns have reportedly been trying to work out a contract extension with Gipson, and this is a great safety net in case talks break down.  The 2nd round tenders seem high for Kitchen and Bademosi, who were expected to receive original-round tenders, but it shows the Browns are confident in the performance and depth that they offer to the existing roster. It’ll be interesting to see how the Gipson situation plays out during free agency but Gipson did offer up a tweet that can set many Browns fans minds at ease.

Do you agree with the Tenders the Browns placed on there Restricted Free Agents?
