Report: Buster Skrine, Browns FA, Expected to Sign with Jets

The Cleveland Browns free agent CB Buster Skrine is reported to be signing with the New York Jets, according to Adam Caplan of ESPN, and confirmed by Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Skrine became a respected starter playing opposite Pro Bowler Joe Haden the last two season, and rookie cornerback Justin Gilbert has struggled mightily this year.

That put the Browns’ in the position to need Skrine back, but at the right price. The thought was if the Browns had to out bid other teams they would let Skrine walk after investing heavily in the cornerback position last-offseason via the draft. Early reports indicate the Jets will sign Skrine for 4-year $25 million with $13 million in guaranteed money.

The Browns’ attempted to address the need at cornerback last off-season by also drafting rookie cornerback Pierre Desir in the fourth round. Desir shows great promise but was injured most of the season and is mostly an unproven commodity. Undrafted rookie K’Waun Williams has outplayed all the other rookie corners, but was primarily used as a nickel corner and was also hindered this season with injuries. Skrine will be missed and it seems the Browns will be looking to there drafted and undrafted rookies to step it up and fill in opposite Joe Haden heading into there second NFL season.

Darrelle Revis is still on the market but reports are that he will also be heading to the Jets. The Browns were willing to spend a lot of money to bring Revis in but he reportedly was looking at either winning with the Patriots or going back to the Jets. The Browns may still look for more corner help but with Gilbert seemingly coming along this off-season and young Desir and Williams they have hope in their youth. Drafting another corner this year is expected no matter what.

Do you think the Browns should have signed Buster Skrine to this big of a deal?
