Sam Bradford to Eagles; Marcus Mariota to Browns?

The Philadelphia Eagles just traded Nick Foles and a draft pick to the St. Louis Rams for Sam Bradford. Bradford would seem like Chip Kelly’s plan at Quarterback:

To give up Foles and at least one draft pick, the Eagles likely plan to use Bradford as their starting quarterback and takes them out of the running for Marcus Mariota. That means that the Heisman Trophy winner will either be coming to the Tennessee Titans, New York Jets or your Cleveland Browns.

The Titans will reportedly work out Mariota after his Pro Day. The Jets have Geno Smith and are reportedly interested in Ryan Fitzpatrick. With the Eagles off the board there is a small chance that Mariota could fall to the Browns at 12, if the Titans and Jets pass, or the Browns could trade up with, say the Jets, to make sure they get Mariota.

Ray Farmer is known to love Mariota last year and is still in search of his long term quarterback option. Mariota will need some time to develop but with Josh McCown likely to start for the Browns, no matter what, this season he should get that chance.

Johnny Manziel is a wildcard for the Browns and not a player they can depend on. Best case scenario is they have a competition between Manziel and Mariota the following season and they have a young QB that they can trade later. Likely that ends with Mariota starting and Manziel being groomed to look good to trade somewhere, the Dallas Cowboys in particular.

Obviously this writer thinks highly of Mariota. He has the size, work ethic and talent base to make things work. He needs time to develop but he might be the Browns best chance at a Franchise QB. They may have to take it.

Today’s Sam Bradford trade to the Eagles could give the Browns a chance to do just that. Whether the Titans or Jets get in the way of that is another discussion.

Now how do you feel about Marcus Mariota and the chance for the Browns to get him after the Sam Bradford, Eagles deal?
