Trent Cole Officially Signs With Colts Over Browns

The Cleveland Browns have officially missed out on Trent Cole who is joining a number of veterans signing with the Indianapolis Colts. Cole was visiting with the Colts yesterday and today after a two day visit with the Browns. Reports earlier were refuted that he had signed with the Colts, it may have been an agent play to get more money.

ESPN is reporting he is signing for pretty big money for an aging vet who had his worst year of his career last year:

For the Browns that may have been too rich for their blood. Cole is a good player but he is past his prime and was likely to be a situational sub player for the Browns. In Indy, whose defense was terrible last year, he is likely to have a much bigger role.

He will also join what is amounting to a Eagles like dream team. Cole will likely be joined by Frank Gore, Tom Herremans and Andre Johnson as veteran additions to a team led by Andrew Luck.

The Browns could still address their pass rush need with Derrick Morgan or another free agent or could go after a bevy of prospects in the NFL Draft. Remember that free agency for the Browns will A) Always be a supplement and B) Always be tough until they start winning. Free agents didn’t like Indy until Manning arrived, then Luck. Winners get players most often.

The Browns continue to be interested in a number of players and are aggressively talking according to all reports. Cole can now be scratched off the list but the first hour of free agency isn’t the end of the process this off-season. We expect some news from the Browns over the next 24 hours. A nose tackle (Dan Williams or Terrance Knighton) or a wide receiver (Cecil Shorts) seem to be on the radar.

Should the Browns have signed Trent Cole to a bigger deal to lure him to Cleveland?
