3 Round Interesting NFL Mock Draft For Browns

facebooktwitterreddit

There are plenty of people putting out NFL Mock Drafts this time of year. We won’t cover all of them but we will cover ones we find interesting as well as national Mock Draft posts. Mocks can be great but they also tend to lead to group think. So a key is to not think that what you have seen in certain NFL Mock Drafts is what will or won’t happen.

For example, Danny Shelton is someone we have talked up a lot here on DPD. We would love to see him selected by the Cleveland Browns. Some Mock Drafts have him as high as 7 to the Chicago Bears. Many fans now think Shelton will be off the board before the Browns pick at 12. Shelton, however, is not a universal prospect. He is a two down player who provides very little pass rushing and is primarily a 3-4 player. Not only could he fall to the Browns at 12 but, based on all of that, he could fall to 19 as well.

Not saying he will but don’t let your mind be made up about where a player “should” be drafted to be based on what analysts are saying. It should give you some idea but should not be decisive.

So on to the NFL Mock Draft that brought us here. Bucs Blitz, a part of the scout.com network, gave us this interesting 3 round NFL Mock Draft to digest. While Justin Pawlowski is a Bucs writer, he is an ardent draftnik and knows his stuff.

Lets take a look at what he has the Cleveland Browns doing in the first 3 rounds:

"Cleveland Browns1st Round: Amari Cooper – WR – Alabama1st Round (via BUF): AriK Armstead – DL – Oregon2nd Round: Maxx Williams – TE – Minnesota3rd Round: Cody Pruitt – S – Ole MissCommish’s Take: I still think the Browns are in the best position to trade up, but if they don’t, they’re also in a good position to get a nice haul. Cooper is a top receiver, the massive Armstead helps their defensive line, and Maxx Williams gives them at least someone to play tight end. Whether it’s Josh McCown or Johnny Manziel, the Browns must get their quarterbacks some help."

Love how they did their Mock, instead of having to go through 3 rounds they put all of the teams’ picks together. A few things out of the way from the first round then we will look the actual selections for the Browns. He has Marcus Mariota going to the Titans as well as Kevin White and Malcom Brown off the board before the Browns pick at 12.

With Shelton still left on the board he has the team still selecting Amari Cooper. Cooper is the most well rounded receiver in the draft. He may never be considered a Top 5 WR in the NFL but for the Browns he can make a huge impact. He has Shelton going a couple picks later to the Dolphins, who might be interested in a small trade down to 19.

Arik Armstead is not the nose tackle the Browns need but he is an amazing athlete that could be amazing in Mike Pettine’s creative system. Armstead could play the 3 or 5 technique with his huge size and wing span. Not only would he help against the run but also in providing help in the pass rush.

Maxx Williams in the second is the best tight end in this draft. Adding Williams and Cooper to Dwayne Bowe, Brian Hartline, Andrew Hawkins and Taylor Gabriel would give the Browns a solid to great group of pass catchers down the road. With the two veterans signed this year, Cooper and Williams won’t have the pressure to produce right away but their skills will be useful.

Pruitt is an interesting prospect at the safety position. He has the size to play either spot but is more of a free safety than strong safety. Donte Whitner needs a long term replacement but with Pettine’s use of 3 safeties needs to replace Jim Leonhard who played that role last year. The Browns are likely to draft a safety this year so finding a talented one in the 3rd would not be a shock.

With their remaining 6 picks the Browns would continue to look for a nose, a versatile offensive lineman, pass rushing edge players and an inside linebacker. While not the perfect draft, this would be a good draft for the Browns if it falls this way.
