NT Danny Shelton to Visit Browns

We here are Dawg Pound Daily have been pumping up Danny Shelton to fill the Cleveland Browns huge, literally and figuratively, need at nose tackle. Shelton has the size, anchor and strength to quickly help improve the Browns horrible, last place run defense. With Shelton the field the Browns are far more likely to force teams into 3rd and long instead of getting gashed for 4 and 5 yards at a time.

A new report gives us hope that the Browns also see something great in Shelton. He is set to visit with the Browns pre-draft:

There are a ton of reasons that teams will bring in a player for a pre-draft visit, all of them is due to interest in drafting the player. Teams are limited to 30 visits and use those visits to help firm up information, rule out concerns and to put players through some work to get  more information.

With Shelton the concerns relate to his weight and motor. He played the most snaps for a interior defensive lineman last year, which may be the reason some of his tape doesn’t show great effort. His weight has fluctuated some in college but a nutritionist  and the Browns strength coach should help with that.

The Browns have a couple of options in the 1st and 2nd rounds of players who can fill their need at nose. Eddie Goldman is an impressive player that could be available at 19 or could fall into the second. Jordan Phillips is considered more of a late 1st, early 2nd player. Phillips is huge, 6’6″, for a nose tackle but he has done a good job of sinking his hips at that size. Motor questions also plaque him.

Shelton, most valuable for 3-4 teams, could fall farther than we expected. At one point we assumed that Shelton would have to be chosen at 12, if he was even there. Based on the talent and needs of teams it is possible that he could fall to 19. Ray Farmer has proven he is willing to make trades as well so if he needs to trade up from 19 to get Shelton, we would not be shocked.

The good news is that the Browns obviously have some interest in Shelton, enough to give him one of their 30 pre-draft visits. He could help turn the Browns defense into a Top 5, 10 level defense next year.
