2015 NFL Draft: Browns select WR Vince Mayle with No. 123 pick
By Paul Noel
The Cleveland Browns have completed a trade with the Arizona Cardinals, to move back a few spots in the fourth round of the draft and they selected wide reciever Vince Mayle with the No. 123 overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft.
The 6-foot-2, 224-pound Mayle is a big player that is raw but has great upside.
According to his draft profile at NFL.com, “(Mayle) Former basketball player. Has good speed and twitch for a big receiver. Can win in space and has tremendous ability to track the ball over his shoulder on deep throws. Has learned to vary route speed to help with separation on slants. Outstanding physical traits for the position. Sinks hips and sits down on route quickly for a receiver his size. Better acceleration than cornerbacks expect on free release. Can get to top speed quickly and has touchdown catches of 72, 81 and 90 yards over last two seasons. Has the body type to overwhelm small cornerbacks. Fights through initial contact after the catch and will grind out tough yards. Slimmed down entering 2014 and put up big numbers in pass-happy offense.”
Just wait there’s more.
According to CBSSports.com, Mayle “Good-sized athlete with light feet and smooth acceleration, turning on the burners downfield as a deep threat. Sharp footwork in the stem of his routes with initial quickness out of his cuts. Springs in his legs to out-leap defenders and highpoint the football. Tracks well with the hand/eye coordination and ballskills to make hands-catches in stride. Adjusts well outside of the normal strike zone with natural body control. Better than expected after the catch with field vision and the lower body flexibility to redirect his momentum and stress defenses – uses the same qualities to anticipate coverage holes and room to operate pre-throw. Lost 20 pounds since arriving at Washington State and appeared to be in much better football shape as a senior, embracing the physical aspect of the game. Extremely productive senior season, leading the Pac-12 in catches (106) and receiving yards (1,483) and finishing second in the country in receiving yards per game (123.6).”

The Browns look like they have identified the need for solid veteran leadership across the board and went out and got two veteran receivers in Dwayne Bowe and Brian Hartline. The Browns’ have addressed key needs along the defensive line, and wide receivers with veterans in free agency. Now they have added a big young talent that the veteran’s can help bring along. At 6’2″, Mayle is another wide receiver prospect that could step-in and stretch the field for the Browns’ offense. The Browns’ offense desperately missed the deep ball last season and had to rely heavily on the slot receivers to stretch the defense. Mayle is an ideal big man that has decent speed (4.6 40 yrd dash), his route running needs to improve, as well as his consistency catching the football. All in all this is a great pick-up for the Browns.
The Browns will be back on the clock with their sixth round pick at No. 189.
