Daily Dawg Tags: Can Browns rely on running game?
By Thomas Moore
Spanning the virtual globe to bring you the best of Cleveland sports – from the Browns to the Indians and Cavs – these are your Daily Dawg Tags for Wednesday, Aug. 5.
Cleveland Browns:
Everything relies on Browns’ running backs:
"All of a sudden there almost seems to be too many cooks in the kitchen when it comes to Cleveland’s running backs. The way offensive coordinator John DeFilippo handles this group could determine just how successful the Browns are in 2015."
Training camp Day 5: Working on the red zone:
"The Cleveland Browns returned to the practice field on Tuesday and spent part of the day working in the red zone, Last season the Browns were 24th in the NFL in red-zone efficiency last season, and over the final three games they were dead last as the wheels came off the offense under rookie quarterbacks Johnny Manziel and Connor Shaw. The Browns should be better in the red zone this season if for no other reason than center Alex Mack will be back on the field."
Browns fans to enjoy nine new beers at FirstEnergy Stadium (NEOMG):
"Starting with the Browns’ first preseason game, Thursday, Aug. 13, against Washington, eight Ohio breweries – all but one from Northeast Ohio – will have 16-ounce cans sold at FirstEnergy Stadium."
Browns turning training camp into actual dog pound (si.com):
"The Browns are turning their training camp into a literal dog pound by featuring dozens of puppies that visiting fans can adopt."
There is a different feel at training camp (clevelandbrowns.com):
"ESPN reporter Bob Holtzman was a mainstay of Browns training camp coverage last season. At this time a year ago, NFL fans around the country fixed their eyes on Berea. That hasn’t been the case in 2015. There may be a little less noise from the Dawg Pound, but the businesslike mentality from coach Mike Pettine’s team has been evident."
This is simply too good to not highlight:
NFL News:
Justin Blackmon’s NFL career may be over (nfl.com):
"Jacksonville general manager Dave Caldwell is finally breaking his silence on troubled wide receiver Justin Blackmon, and it doesn’t look promising for the former top-5 pick. In fact, Caldwell thinks Blackmon’s career is over."
Charles Johnson is OK with being different (The Viking Age):
"When you see Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Charles Johnson, you know it. He sticks out like a sore thumb in a group of NFL athletes, but that isn’t a bad thing."
Arian Foster facing surgery for groin injury (Toro Times):
"In the first day of practice with pads, Arian Foster has a severe groin injury. It has been reported by multiple sources that he will be forced to have surgery. He will miss the rest of the preseason and most likely multiple regular season games."
Is it too early to worry about Jameis Winston? (USA Today):
"Rookie Jameis Winston is throwing interceptions in training camp, but the Buccaneers are not worried."
Cleveland Sports:
Tristan Thompson has all the leverage (King James Gospel):
"Cleveland has refused to formally offer Tristan Thompson a max contract and right now all that is really dangling out there is a $6.7 million qualifying offer. This seems bogus, but it gives Thompson all of the leverage in contract negotiations."
Could Michael Bourn be playing himself into a trade? (Wahoo’s on First):
"Since the All-Star break Michael Bourn has been playing like a real Major Leaguer. Could he be playing himself right out of town?"
