UPDATE: Cleveland Browns quarterback Connor Shaw broke the thumb on his throwing hand during Thursday night’s game and will require surgery, the team announced on Sunday.
He is expected to miss an extended period of time.
“I feel for Connor because he has worked extremely hard,” head coach Mike Pettine said. “He’s a competitor and has had a great offseason and a good camp so far. He is good for the quarterback room and it’s unfortunate that this injury won’t allow him to compete.”
The original story from Saturday night is below.
Cleveland Browns third-string quarterback Connor Shaw reportedly has a broken wrist on his right throwing hand that will require surgery.
The break was first reported in a Tweet by Scott Sargent from the Cleveland website Waiting for Next Year.
Following Sargent’s Tweet, Daryl Ruiter of 92.3 the Fan in Cleveland posted a photo to his Instagram account from today’s practice showing Shaw with his wrist wrapped.
If it turns out that he does need surgery, it’s a tough break for Shaw as he battles for a spot on the Browns 53-man roster. He faced a tough battle even with healthy as the Browns only kept two quarterbacks on the active roster last season.
Just last week Shaw earned some praise for his increased velocity following his work in the Orange and Brown Scrimmage at Ohio Stadium.
“That’s something from a mechanics standpoint I know (quarterbacks coach Kevin O’Connell) has been working hard with him,” head coach Mike Pettine told the team’s website. “When your feet are right, you can generate a lot more force on the ball and drive it. Anytime you’re throwing outside the numbers, you really have to drive the football and that’s been a point of emphasis with Connor.”

Shaw saw action in Thursday night’s preseason friendly against Washington, completing five-of-10 passes for 64 yards while taking two of the five sacks that the Browns surrendered.
An undrafted free agent out of South Carolina, spent the first 16 weeks of the 2014 season on the Browns practice squad. But with Brian Hoyer and Johnny Manziel injured heading into the season finale against Baltimore, Shaw was called upon to take over the starter’s role.
Shaw was 14-of-28 for 177 yards and threw an interception as the Browns lost the game, but showed off his toughness in the process. He dislocated a finger on his non-throwing hand during the game, and took a blow to the kidneys that left him passing blood after the game, but didn’t miss a snap.
