You’ve probably read my work on Johnny Manziel (if not, click the link in the “related” section below). Personally, I think he should start over Josh McCown for many reasons.
One being that you already know what you’re going to get out of McCown, and at some point this season, Johnny will play anyway.

Another has to do with Manziel’s new poise and maturity. His game looks more refined, and I’m not sure if sitting him on the bench to start the regular season is the right way to gain experience.
Everyone has an opinion, and that’s what makes these kind of topics entertaining to talk about. Many keep pointing out that he’s playing against second and third teamer’s, and yes that is true, but he himself is also playing with second and third teamer’s on his own club. Many of the players whom he’s lined up with, will most likely not be on the roster, or even if they are, will be seeing their contribution on special teams. That being said, to use numbers solely to judge his play isn’t all fair. They eye test is a bit more important in preseason, because of that reason.
McCown on the other hand, completed 70% of his passes against a tough Buffalo Bills defense on thursday, yet turned the ball over twice. It’s kind of a weird outing for the veteran, because completing a high percentage of short passes is what this offense is about, but obviously it’s done to limit turnovers.
Although, Manziel only completed 10 of his 18 passes against Buffalo, he started off 9 for 12 before a final drive that was littered with poor wide reciever/offensive line play.
Let’s dig a bit deeper into the numbers. Here’s what the two have done thus far in two preseason games:
