Daily Dawg Tags: Just say no to Zach Mettenberger
By Thomas Moore
Spanning the virtual globe to bring you the best of Cleveland sports – from the Browns to the Indians and Cavs – these are your Daily Dawg Tags for Tuesday, Aug. 25.
Cleveland Browns:
Zach Mettenberger not the answer at QB:
"We get it. The Cleveland Browns are the most incompetent franchise in all of sports, one that can’t find a quarterback, can’t win a football game and can barely remember how to correctly put on a helmet before taking the field. The Browns still have several questions surrounding the quarterback. But Zach Mettenberger is not the answer to any of them."
Joe Thomas weighs in on Deflategate:
"Deflategate has turned into the most talked about story over the course of the offseason, and it really shouldn’t have. Once Tom Brady hits the field, or for that matter, the first game is played, who is going to care about Deflategate besides some bitter Pats fans? But, before the story takes a bow and heads off into the sunset, we still have some players who are willing to comment on it. Enter, Joe Thomas."
Kicker competition “neck and neck” (clevelandbrowns.com):
"On paper, it’s hard to find much separation between Browns kickers Carey Spear and Travis Coons in their ongoing competition. On the paper Browns special teams coordinator Chris Tabor fills with the finer details of the two-man battle, it’s even closer."
Browns to show doubters “high-powered” attack (nfl.com):
"If nothing else, the Cleveland Browns have a loyal cheerleader in Dwayne Bowe. Weeks after calling Josh McCown a “top-five quarterback,” the veteran wideout emerged again on Saturday to rave over an offense no longer laced with playmakers Josh Gordon or Jordan Cameron."
NFL News:
Brian Hoyer earns starting nod in Houston (Toro Times):
"It only took two preseason games for the Houston Texans to decide on who will be the starter between quarterbacks Ryan Mallett and Brian Hoyer as the team is reportedly going with the more experienced Hoyer."
Chip Kelly not happy with hit on Sam Bradford (Inside the Iggles):
"It’s no surprise that one of the foremost concerns for Chip Kelly following Saturday’s game was the hit that Ravens OLB Terrell Suggs delivered to Sam Bradford‘s surgically repaired left knee."
Patriots sign Reggie Wayne (Musket Fire):
"According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the New England Patriots have signed former Colts receiver Reggie Wayne to a one-year deal."
What do NFL scouts look for in the preseason? (WFNY):
"As WFNY did in evaluating the Browns’ 2015 draft class, we acquired some help. I spoke to an NFL scout who pulled back the curtain and revealed some of what goes on behind the scenes as teams try to figure out who will make the final rosters. Our conversation didn’t touch much on the current Browns roster, but rather the process that goes into roster decisions in general."
Cleveland Sports:
Changes are needed to fix the Tribe’s offense (Wahoo’s on First):
"The Cleveland Indians have a very talented pitching staff, which keeps the team in contention for many wins. Their offense is another story. Consistent run production has continued to prevent success for far too long."
Should LeBron and Kyrie’s minutes be reduced? (King James Gospel):
"If it weren’t for the injuries to Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love during the NBA Playoffs, we might be talking about the 50-year championship drought ending in Cleveland. You cannot avoid injuries, they are something every athlete has to overcome throughout their career. With that being the case, is there anything the Cavaliers can do to help prevent them?"
