If things started out great for the Browns on the opening series of the game, it got even better when Tampa Bay lined up to punt.
Travis Benjamin returned the punt 53 yards for a touchdown and, in the process, continued to show that he is once again becoming the player he was before his season-ending knee injury in 2013.
“We had a punt return called to that side. I can’t remember who got that block, but it was a key block on that play, and once he got him and I split, I knew it was me and the punter and I knew I could outrun him,” Benjamin said. “I am 100 percent ready to go out there and play ball.”
Pettine echoes Benjamin’s comments.
“It’s great to see it. We wanted to make sure we got him some live touches in the preseason and for him to pop the first one. I’m not sure if he really got out of third gear,” the coach said. “We blocked it well. I don’t know how many guys he had to make miss, but that’s much like the Travis of old. We talked about the knee and how it is going to take that extra time to get back but I think we are seeing the results with it being two years out.”
Kickers Cary Spear and Travis Coon also continued their battle for the placekicking role, with both players hitting a pair of extra points and Spear converting a 36-yard field goal.
All in all, it was a very solid night for the special teams.
