Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel said on Tuesday that he will not require surgery for the sore elbow that has sidelined him until at least the start of the regular season.

Manziel also said the sore elbow will not be a problem once the season begins.

“It kind of comes and goes,” Manziel said. “In the offseason, it is really not much of a problem. OTAs weren’t much of a problem. As we get into camp it is a little bit of a grind because we are throwing every day. It kind of comes and goes. It comes with rest. As I get a little bit more rest it gets back to normal.

“We reached out to a lot of people, definitely, during this process to make sure that we were all handling – everyone with the Browns, (head athletic trainer) Joe Sheehan – we asked a lot of second opinions. I think Dr. Andrews was one of those people we did reach out to and made sure this was the route we wanted to go as far as giving it some rest and making sure we got an MRI to be cautious and make sure there wasn’t anything serious, which there wasn’t.

“I think the past couple days have been good progress getting back to where it needs to be.” – Johnny Manziel on his sore elbow

“This is an injury that from everything I’ve heard, no matter what the case it wouldn’t require that. More than anything it’s just sore, just a little bit of overthrowing and make sure I’m icing and doing what I need to do.”

Even though the Browns have shut down Manziel for more than a week now, the club is not feeling any pressure to play him in Thursday night’s preseason finale against Chicago.

“Whoever our two quarterback is – right now we’re hopeful that it’s going to be Johnny – he has to be able to throw,” head coach Mike explained. “We’re not going to roll the dice and go into a game, especially after Josh (McCown) showed us that he can be a little bit on the reckless side sometimes. No, Johnny, we’re confident that he’ll be where ne heeds to be, and like I said before, if we’re not, then we’ll address it appropriately.”

Hopefully the doctors are right that surgery will not be necessary, and that Manziel, who admitted he’s been dealing with this issue since his freshman year at Texas A&M, can manage the pain.

And if the Browns are forced to call upon Manziel this season?

“Throwing during the year is nothing like it is during camp so I am very confident that it is not going to creep back and there won’t be another problem,” Manziel said. “I think it’s just mixed with camp and the amount of days we were going out. I think that was the main focus of it. I don’t expect it to go away completely because this is kind of an injury where I will feel a little bit of tightness, your elbow will get sore just from being a quarterback and throwing. That is not anything out of the ordinary.”

While the plan is for Manziel not to see the field in any meaningful way this season, the reality is that the Browns have not had the same quarterback start a full season since Tim Couch was still on the squad.

Meaning this is probably not the last we’ll hear of Manziel and his elbow.
