Why Josh McCown has perfectly executed his role this preseason
Have you ever hungout with your friends and your parents made you include your little brother or sister? You kind of give them that “just don’t be annoying” look, and try to enjoy the night with your buddies.

That same situation reminds of the Cleveland Browns and quarterback, Josh McCown.
The Browns brought in McCown to be the preverbal “game manager.” A term widely recognized with quarterback, Alex Smith. Basically saying, just don’t mess things up.
This isn’t expected to be a big-play offense, and it clearly won’t be judging on personal. That’s why they decided to go a different way in regards to offensive strategy.
In the team’s annual search for an offensive coordinator, they gave John DeFilippo a shot. DeFilippo, served as the Oakland Raiders quarterbacks coach for the past three seasons. Bringing the west coast offense back to the state it originated in.
The west coast offense from a quarterback’s standpoint, is centered around getting the ball out quickly with short passes, and completing a high percentage of passes. Focussed on yards after the catch by receivers.
Well, all McCown has done this preseason has completed passes.
76% of his 38 passes thus far in preseason have been completed. Posting a passer rating over 100 in two of the team’s three games. I understand it’s just preseason, but it’s exactly what the organization had hoped for.
This is also without any running game to speak of for Cleveland.
He did have a hiccup against the Buffalo Bills, but that’s also against a defense that projects to be one of the three best in football this season. I wouldn’t take too much away from that performance, even it did happened to yield two turnovers.
If you’ve read any of my work over the past couple weeks, I’ve been a supporter of Johnny Manziel being the starter. As fans, so have you. But his recent elbow injury obviously has destroyed any shot he had to earn it out of camp.
As a fan though, how could you complain with what you’ve seen so far from McCown?
At some point this year, I do think Manziel will take the reigns as starter, because why wouldn’t he?As a first-round pick just over a year ago, you have to find out if he’s worth investing another season in, or if it’s time to look for a quarterback in the draft.
At the moment, Josh McCown is clearly the Browns starting quarterback, and that might not be as bad as some people might have originally thought. Me being one of those people.
Are you as impressed as I am about Josh McCown’s preseason so far?
