The Cleveland Browns are reportedly “fielding offers” for second-year running back Terrance West, according to NFL.com.

One of the teams calling about West is reportedly the Houston Texans,

Now there is a huge difference between the Browns actively shopping a player and other teams calling to see if they can pry someone loose.

West carried the ball nine times for 35 yards against the Bears on Thursday night, finishing the preseason with 113 yards on 31 rushes, an average of just 3.65 yards per carry. West led Cleveland in rushing last season with 673 yards and four rushing touchdowns.

Earlier this week head coach Mike Pettine talked about how West needs to show more consistency if he wants to earn carries in a backfield with Isaiah Crowell and Duke Johnson.

“Terrance, it’s been well-documented, has had his ups and downs,” Pettine said. “He flashes, at times, brilliance and then other times he gets a minus on the grade sheet. That’s always been some of the issues we’ve had with him.

“We know he can do it; it just has to be on a more consistent basis. That’s one of the reasons why we felt like he needed to get a good amount of work last night.”

While anything is possible, offensive coordinator John DeFilippo has stated that he will employ the always popular “running back by committee” approach this season and go with the hot hand each week, which would seem to indicate that unless they are blown away by a solid offer (and in the Texans’ case, that doesn’t mean quarterback Ryan Mallett), the Browns would be comfortable starting the season with West on the roster.
