The Cleveland Browns will debut their brown jersey/orange pants combination in Sunday’s season-opening game against the New York Jets.

"Opening the regular season with this"

It will be the first time in 11 years that the Browns have won this particular color combination, according to the team’s website, which is one of of nine uniform combinations the Browns currently have at their disposal. It is also the first time the team will sport the brown jerseys since reports came out that the coaching staff is unhappy that they can’t see the orange numerals on the jerseys while reviewing game film.

The Browns first debuted orange pants in 1975 and wore them through the 1983 season, an era most Browns fans fondly recall as the Kardiac Kids years. Sadly, the new uniforms looking nothing like those classic ones, but what can you do? The Browns did post a winning percentage of .583 with the brown jersey/orange pant combo, however, so maybe that is a good sign of things to come in 2015.

The last time the Browns sported this combination was on Nov. 14, 2004, during a home game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Browns lost that day, 24-10, to drop to 3-6 on the season. According to the game description from the 2013 book, The Browns Bible:

"In one of the ugliest incidents in team history, a brawl erupted between Browns and Steelers players during opening warm-ups, resulting in the pregame ejections of William Green and Pittsburgh linebacker Joey Porter. With a nasty atmosphere setting the tone, Richard Alston broke free on the opening kickoff for the second straight week, sprinting 74 yards to set up a Browns’ field goal."

"The Cleveland offense could do very little for the remainder of the game as the 7-1 Steelers gradually overwhelmed the Browns, rushing for 180 yards and building a 24-3 lead. Meanwhile, the Browns allowed four sacks and turned the ball over four times, including a fourth-quarter fumble scooped up by defensive back Russell Stuvaints (a Youngstown State alumnus) and returned 24 yards for Pittsburgh’s final touchdown."

"The Browns finally reached the end zone late after Kelly Holcomb replaced Jeff Garcia at quarterback."

It is probably pretty safe to say that nothing like that will occur on Sunday against the Jets.
