The Cleveland Browns made an expected roster move on Saturday, signing running back Shaun Draughn from the team’s practice squad.

The team announced the move on its website.

Draughn is insurance for Sunday’s game against the New York Jets in case something happens to starting running back Isaiah Crowell or rookie Duke Johnson, who will be seeing his first game action after suffering a concussion against Tampa Bay on Aug. 29.

The 27-year-old Draughn appeared in four games with the Browns last season but did not register a carry. In a career that has seen him spend time with San Diego, Chicago, Baltimore and Kansas City before arriving in Cleveland, Draughn has totaled 245 yards on 73 carries and 24 receptions for 158 yards.

Even though he has seen limited action, Draughn is the veteran of the group and has been doing what he can to mentor Crowell and Johnson.

“Yeah, those guys, I think they definitely look up to me. I try to set the bar high, how we practice, how we should practice,” Draughn said during training camp. “(Running backs) coach (Wilbert) Montgomery, he has given me free reign to really coach the guys up from my perspective. He played the game, too, but somebody that they can relate to that’s actually still playing so he gives me free reign to take these guys under my wing and tell them a little bit of what I know.”

Draughn joined the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent out of North Carolina, and played in his first NFL game in 2011. The following season he played in all 16 games with the Chiefs and finished with 59 carries for 233 yards and two touchdowns and 24 receptions for 158 yards.

He appeared in three games with the Baltimore Ravens in 2013, moved to the Chicago Bears for two games, the San Diego Chargers for four games before joining the Browns.
