Why Browns fans are fired up this time around

I had every intention of writing another article that would mirror a few colleagues, but go against the vast majority of the media and talk about how going with Josh McCown was the right choice for the Cleveland Browns. I even had a few different points that I hadn’t read anywhere else yet, but then I came to a realization that maybe I knew the whole time.

This is the latest example that shows just how absolutely nuts a ton of Browns fans are.

Breathe. It will be OK, I promise.

I get it, I do. Losing. Years of losing. Instant gratification. We want it and we want it now. I can hear the roars of frustration from the Shores of Lake Erie bouncing off the Rocky Mountains outside the window of my hotel room.

People all over the Internet are in an uproar about the decision to start McCown over Johnny Manziel. From the big time sports sites talking about how head coach Mike Pettine is a coward to social media lamenting that it’s just more of the same old Browns, negativity once again abounds in Cleveland.

It may not be the popular move given the strong feelings about Manziel from the fan base and the nation, but it’s the move a traditional coach like Pettine makes. – Pat McManamon ESPN Staff Writer

The exact same people who I have seen absolutely bashing Manziel for the last year and now riding high on the bandwagon singing his praises and yelling at anything that YOU HAVE TO AT LEAST GIVE HIM A CHANCE NOW!!!!!

I’m not saying either love him or hate him, then stick with your decision. What I am saying is try to take just an iota of emotion out of your ranting and raving and try to see from the coaches perspective why maybe the coaching staff would go with the veteran who in one drive got one-third of the yards Manziel did in the entire rest of the game. I’m not going to rehash the reasons that are already out there, but here are a few good reasons, and here are a few more.

Now Johnny is upset with the decision that resulted in his going back to the bench. Forgive my complete insensitivity but boo freaking hoo. If Manziel didn’t want to be relegated to the clipboard while he gets it together, then he probably should have come to a realization that he might have a problem before the Browns invested a first round pick in him. Actions have consequences.

All of that being said, and before all those who feel I am singling them out (and attacking them) lose their minds on me, I have been one of Manziel’s most ardent and vocal supporters since he checked himself into rehab, I’ve even written about it (at least his potential) here. I am a huge fan of Johnny Manziel’s. There isn’t a player out there that not only I want to see succeed, but I strongly feel can be a legitimate starting quarterback in this league for years to come.

So, what’s my point after all of this rambling? Just that we all should work a little harder to try to think things through clearly and concisely before we let our emotions get a hold of us and set our minds to something that may or may not make the most sense. Maybe, just maybe, Coach Pet knows what he is doing. He did lead the team to its 3rd best season since returning to the league last year.

The bottom line is this. Manziel will get another chance this year. The true test of a man is not necessarily how he responds after he gets knocked off of the horse the first time, but whether he’s able to get back up on the horse after the second, third and fourth times he gets knocked off. This will test Manziel’s character. Maybe that’s the point to a small degree. Maybe not. Maybe coach Pettine knows what he’s doing. Or maybe he just lucked his way through last season. Time will tell. Let’s try to get cooler heads prevail.
