As much as losing has been a constant for the Cleveland Browns since the team returned to the NFL in 1999, there is another aspect that is every bit as predictable as another three-and-out from the offense.

No matter what, there are fans who are going to complain about the starting quarterback.

It has been no different in the 24 hours since the Browns lost to Oakland, with fans clamoring for quarterback Josh McCown to hop the first bus out of town. (And if he could take those new uniforms with him it would be even better.)

This despite the fact that Sunday’s loss, in just about every way possible, was a team loss, as head coach Mike Pettine pointed out in his post-game press conference.

“(We were) not good enough in all three phases,” Pettine said. “We have to start much better. I told the guys afterward that was a wasted opportunity – great day at home, in front of our crowd begging for something to cheer about, and we had them sitting on their hands for a good part of the game. We have to play better on all phases. That is clear.

“I told them – I am not saying anything different that I said to the team – our theme for the year is words into action. We need to play better before we talk about potentially how good we can be.”

Be that as it may, there is clearly something wrong as the Browns sit at 1-2 after a dispiriting loss to an Oakland team that has been beyond horrible on the road over the past three seasons.

So let’s try to see if we can figure out who is to blame for the offense’s woes.
