The Cleveland Browns released the opening injury report for Sunday’s game with the Denver Broncos and quarterback Josh McCown is listed as limited as he recovers from an ankle injury.
With a few days to prepare for the Broncos, and weeks of training camp and practice under his belt, the Browns will be careful with McCown this week.
“(Josh) is sore and we’ll be mindful of that,” head coach Mike Pettine said. “The game is not until Sunday. He has logged enough reps. We might scale his reps back today, but he’ll be out there.”
McCown talked with reporters on a conference call on Tuesday and said the injury did not require an MRI, which hopefully is a good sign.
“The ankle feels pretty good,” McCown said. “I’ll keep treating it, and we’ll move forward accordingly, but it feels good.
“We’ll just keep getting treatment and see how it goes. Like I said, the ankle feels good. I’m hopeful and planning on being able to play and all that stuff. We’ll see as we move forward.”
While McCown was able to return to the practice field, the Browns are without two starters in the secondary. Cornerback Joe Haden is dealing with a concussion and safety Tashaun Gipson, who missed the game against the Baltimore Ravens, is not practicing because of an ankle injury.
Pettine said it is “too early to tell” if Gipson will be available for the game against the Broncos.
