Joe Thomas, an eight-time Pro Bowler, continues to play at a high level. On a weekly basis Thomas plays at an elite level and shuts down the opposing defense’s best players. Last week against Denver was just the latest example, as Thomas shut down Broncos’ pass rusher Von Miller. Thomas did not allow Miller to get a sack and eliminated his presence in the run game, as Miller finished the game with just one tackle.

“I think he does a good job anticipating the snap. He’s very good with his hands. He’s a blend of size, power and speed.” – Head coach Mike Pettine on Robert Quinn

This week, Thomas has another battle as he will face Robert Quinn, a two-time Pro Bowler and a First-Team All-Pro selection in 2013. (Although Quinn did not practice on Thursday and is questionable for Sunday’s game.)

Quinn has record 10 or more sacks for three consecutive seasons and led the NFL with 19 sacks in 2013. Quinn is an elite pass rusher and Thomas is an elite left tackle, which makes this the most-intriging matchup on Sunday. Quinn has distributive pass rushing ability and, if given the opportunity, will make his impact on a game. If he can play, it will be key for Thomas to limit Quinn’s presence rushing the passer.

While Josh McCown has been more than serviceable this season when operating from a clean pocket, when pressured he has shown his flaws and the offense has struggled. Last week, McCown felt the rush often from the Denver defense and it resulted in three turnovers.

Keeping Quinn away from McCown on Sunday will be a key if the offense wants to find success against another stout defense.
