Cleveland Browns wide receiver Andrew Hawkins has been placed on season-ending injured reserve as he is still recovering from his second concussion of the season.

The Cleveland Browns placed wide receiver Andrew Hawkins on season-ending injured reserve and signed linebacker Jayson DiManche to the roster.

The team announced the move on its website.

Hawkins joins cornerback Joe Haden as players the Browns have lost his season due to a concussion. Browns players have suffered 12 concussions this season, the second-highest total in the NFL.

Hawkins suffered a concussion when he took a borderline illegal hit from Nick Fairley of the St. Louis Rams then suffered another one on what was certainly an illegal hit from Pittsburgh’s Jarvis Jones on Nov. 15 and hasn’t played since. That hit landed Hawkins in the hospital overnight and left him with no memory of the hit.

“I know it is a tricky subject. Anytime you have a concussion that lingers for as long as Joe Haden’s did and Hawk’s did, you are going to be ultra-cautious with it,” head coach Mike Pettine said on Wednesday. “I know Hawk sought out a second opinion, as he should. We wanted him to take a little bit more time and then go back. I won’t go into the details, but hopefully, at some point, we can make that same statement with Hawk. It is nothing that you ever want to risk.”

The concussions limited Hawkins to just eight games this season. He finishes the year with just 27 receptions for 276 yards and no touchdowns, just a season after he led the Browns in receptions (63) and yards (824) and having two touchdown receptions.

DiManche is in his third season out of Southern Illinois after being signed as an undrafted free agent by the Cincinnati Bengals.

The 6-foot-1, 245-pound DiManche spent three weeks on the Browns’ active roster this season, appearing in one game and has been on the practice squad the past five weeks.
